‘Theodoros Papagiannis’ Modern Art Museum was founded in 2009; it is housed at the old Primary School of Elliniko, a village in the vicinity of Ioannina, the home sculptor Theodoros Papagiannis was born in. It is a grand two-storey stone building, which the sculptor chose so as to pay tribute to the place where he was raised. The construction of the Museum was financed by benefactor Nikolaos Mantelopoulos.
Visitors can enjoy a wonderful, guided tour of a unique exhibition. The works talk of the place, Epirus, and its history. They were inspired by memories etched in the sculptor’s mind, feeding his creativity. The museum honours benefactors, bread, learning, and ordinary anonymous people. The themes of the sculpted works are local inhabitants, who are farmers, animal breeders and masons, as well as Epirot mothers.
Ground floor exhibits are busts and a few other works. The main part of the exhibition is on the top floor. What is impressive is the harmonious coexistence of recyclable or re-used materials contained in the sculpted works. Exhibits in the corridor showcases are moulds of medals and coins and were crafted over a period of about 40 years. Visitors are given the opportunity to see items not found in any other museum in our country. A special theme is reflected in the spectacle of the classroom with pupils, old desks, the teacher, and the spectators. The sculptor named this ‘The Learning Classroom’. Inside the museum there is also a library and a gift shop.
The museum courtyard exhibits include 20 large projects made with different materials (bronze, marble, stainless iron, or other metals) created by Papagiannis or other artists. These works have been made in the context of the annual sculpture symposium organised at museum premises. The event is hosted at Ellinikon from the beginning of August to the beginning of September with the participation of Greek and international artists.
The museum attracts visitors for around the world and welcomes educational visits by school or university students.
